Thanks to the telemetry work that the project has been carrying out in recent years, we now know that adult Yelkouan Shearwaters are not limited to the Black Sea only in winter. They return to it again and again during the breeding season, taking advantage of its rich fishing grounds.

The young birds, however, seem to follow a different path: before reaching the same destination, they wander as if they are “learning the way.” Most of them move around the Aegean, especially to the north, while five young Yelkouan Shearwaters, after about a week of exploration, finally reached the Black Sea.
A key area for the young birds seems to be the marine zone between Lesvos, Lemnos, Imvros, Tenedos and the Dardanelles.
These first journeys are their school of life”: they learn how to find food, identify safe areas, migrate, and strengthen their wings.
Each new GPS track adds yet another piece to the puzzle of how these magnificent #seabirds chart their course in the vast marine world!
