Researchers from the Natural History Museum and NCC traveled to the wider region of Naxos, aiming to locate nests of Yelkouan shearwaters (Puffinus yelkouan) and Scopoli’s shearwaters (Calonectris diomedea) within the Makaronisi island complex.

On one of the islands, nests of both species were found! The team carried out bird ringing, morphometric measurements, genetic sampling, and radio tagging of Scopoli’s shearwaters breeding in the area. Following this, the team conducted boat surveys to detect other seabird species across the surrounding region. A small colony of Audouin’s gulls spotted on an islet of the area!  And it wasn’t just seabirds that caught the researchers’ attention—cetacean species were also observed in the area.
