The documentary “LIFE MareNatura – Protecting Marine Life in a Changing World” enjoyed a highly successful world premiere on November 13 at the French Institute of Greece, as part of the Science Festival themed “The Voice of the Ocean”.
The T. Angelopoulos Hall was filled to capacity as a large and enthusiastic audience gathered for the film’s first-ever screening. The event was organized by MEDASSET / Mediterranean Association to Save the Sea Turtles, producer of the documentary on behalf of the LIFE MareNatura project.
Researchers, project partners, environmental professionals, and friends of the sea came together for an evening that celebrated the beauty of the Mediterranean while also addressing the urgent challenges it faces. The atmosphere was warm, dynamic, and deeply engaging, creating the stage for meaningful dialogue and reflection.
The premiere was curated by film critic Giannis Kantea-Papadopoulos (Athinorama), who introduced the screening and provided valuable context for the audience.
A special highlight of the evening was the presence of the documentary’s director, Roberto Lo Monaco, who traveled to Athens especially for the premiere. He shared personal insights and behind-the-scenes experiences from filming, offering a unique perspective on the creative and scientific journey behind the documentary.
A lively dialogue with the audience
Following the screening, a vibrant discussion unfolded between the audience and the film’s contributors, focusing on the challenges, opportunities, and urgency of protecting marine biodiversity in the Mediterranean.
During the event, special moments stood out with the project partners — HCMR, NECCA, University of the Aegean, University of Crete – Natural History Museum of Crete, National Observatory of Athens, Hellenic Ornithological Society, MOm / The Hellenic Society for the Study and Protection of the Monk Seal, ARCHELON, NCC Italian Institute for Environmental Protection and Research, WaterProof Marine Consultancy & Services BV, as well as the external policy partner The Green Tank.
The partners shared their enthusiasm and responded to questions regarding the importance of marine biodiversity conservation and their contribution to the LIFE MareNatura project. Their responses highlighted practical actions, achievements, and the project team’s shared vision, offering a comprehensive picture of the collective effort to protect the Mediterranean Sea.

Following its successful premiere, the documentary now embarks on its international journey, participating in film festivals around the world.
